About Franz & Marie Franz & Marie at The Arches, London, is a stage adaptation of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, reimagined as an indie raw folk musical. Set in the late 19th-century world of European folklore, it follows Franz Woyzeck, a soldier stationed at an isolated outpost after time on the front line, as he struggles with nightmares and hallucinations.
The story centres on Franz, his girlfriend Marie and their baby, Georgie. Forbidden from taking leave during the war, Franz and Marie have been unable to marry, and he does everything he can to provide for them. The production was originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom and was created by members of The Singing Loins, with this version reimagined for a 14-strong cast of actor-musicians.
Directed by Michael Oakley, it is adapted for the stage by Teresa Howard from the book and lyrics by Chris Broderick, with music by Rob Shepherd and Chris Broderick, arrangements, orchestrations and additional music by Steven Edis, choreography by Ben Wright, lighting design by Christopher Nairne, sound design by Andrew Johnson and Oscar Cotran, and design by Bretta Gerecke.
