JWST has discovered a population of puzzling high-redshift objects; the so-called 'little red dots' (LRDs). Here, I will present self-consistent radiative-transfer models of LRDs as early accreting supermassive black holes embedded in gaseous cocoons. I will show how the enshrouding gas can explain their observed properties across the X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and infrared bands, and discuss distinctive features such as nitrogen-rich broad-line gas. I may conclude with research ideas for my Junior Research Fellowship over the next five years.
