Speaker: Ben Sargeant, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College
Series: Physics and Chemistry of Solids Group
Nuclear reactor pressure vessels are made from tough steels to prevent sudden failure, but their behaviour during impacts is not well understood. This work researched different methods to test the fracture toughness of materials when impacted. A new test method was developed to interrupt tests up to 10 m/s and used to further understanding of how reactor steels behave during rapid loading.
