The concept of quantum computing has been around for four decades. Over this period, scientists and engineers have made tremendous progress in realizing quantum computers across various physical platforms. IBM launched the first cloud service for a five-qubit quantum processor a decade ago. Since then, progress has accelerated, backed by both private and public funding.
Why are we so fascinated by the idea of quantum computing, even though fully functional machines do not yet exist and it remains unclear when they will be fully realized? In this talk, we review the current status of quantum computing, key challenges, and future research directions to address them
