Although these diverse traditions are often collectively referred to as “Lanna dance,” each community has its own grammar of movement — expressed through weight, rhythm, space, gesture and the ways movements are connected. Directed by Pichet Klunchun , the performance brings these different bodies of knowledge together on a contemporary stage, inviting us to ask: “How does each community create meaning through movement?” Following its presentation at Chiang Mai College of Dramatic Arts in August 2026 , Grammar of Lanna Living Bodies now comes to Bangkok for a presentation at the National Theatre as part of MOVE THAI — a platform that brings traditional performance into contemporary spaces, connecting artists, embodied knowledge, audiences and networks. --- Although the traditional dances of Northern Thailand are often collectively called “Lanna dance,” a closer look reveals that each province and community has its own ways of using the body, rhythm, weight, space and movement. “Grammar of Lanna Living Bodies” invites audiences to see Fon Mueang as a living system of knowledge embodied in people , rather than simply as a form of traditional performance that must be preserved unchanged. Developed through work with Lanna dancers from 8 provinces of Northern Thailand , the performance explores the different “grammars of the body” found across these communities. Some traditions place particular emphasis on shifting weight and maintaining balance; others have distinctive ways of organising the body in space, while some retain traces of martial arts or local ways of life within their movements. These differences are not simply matters of dance style. They are connected to the landscape, history, beliefs, language and ways of life of each community. The performance therefore does not ask only: “What is the correct way to perform the dance?” Instead, it invites us to consider another question: “How does each community create meaning through movement?” Contact LINE: @PKDC E-mail: [email protected] FonMuangMuangFon 's website (โครงการฟ้อนเมือง เมืองฟ้อน)— fonmuang.com PKDC's webiste: — pkdance.co
