"10 Things I Hate About You" Movie Night: Shakespearean Adaptations Film Series

The screening of the 1999 romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, starring Julia Styles and Heath Ledger, is part of the Shakespeare Adaptations film series hosted by Professor Erik Wade of the Department of English and Creative Writing. Each film adapts a classic Shakespeare play for a modern audience. Every screening will begin with a brief synopsis of the original play by Wade, followed by a screening of the movie, and then an opportunity for discussion afterward.

10 Things I Hate About You is an adaptation of Shakespeare's classic comedy The Taming of the Shrew. The Taming of the Shrew is one of Shakespeare's more controversial plays due to its sexist plot, which features Petruchio, who "tames" the strong-willed Katherine until she is willing to marry him. 10 Things I Hate About You follows edgy high-schooler Patrick (Ledger), who is dared to date his headstrong feminist classmate Kat (Styles).
