Join us for an artist talk with renowned sculptor Charles Ray, followed by a conversation with Patrick R. Crowley, Associate Curator of European Art at the Cantor. For over fifty years, Charles Ray has worked towards the limits of sculpture, exploring how the transformation of space can change a viewer's relationship to an object. Ray will reflect on his work over the decades, including his 16mm film Fashions (1996), which is currently on view in Solid Pictures. Curated by Patrick R. Crowley, Solid Pictures is the first major exhibition to explore the overlooked 1859 photosculptures of French artist and inventor François Willème, whose experiments translating photographic negatives into three-dimensional figures lay the groundwork for modern 3D scanning and printing technologies. Crowley will join Ray in conversation to discuss how Ray’s broader practice connects to the questions in the exhibition around three-dimensionality, consumerism, and how clothing and fashion sit within the perceptual understanding of a figure. All public programs at the Cantor Arts Center are always free! Space for this program is limited; advance registration is recommended. Those who have registered will have priority for seating.
