This Weird Girl Halloween, we’re reading The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson!
Stephen King called its legendary opening paragraph one of the finest descriptive passages in the English language, “the sort of quiet epiphany every writer hopes for: words that somehow transcend the sum of the parts.”
The book is short, at around 200 pages, but it’s so much more than a ghost story. It’s a story about family, home, isolation, and fear.
Join us on Saturday, October 31st at 3 PM to discuss the book, share our thoughts, and chat over coffee. Whether you loved it or were spooked beyond words, we’d love to hear what you think!

Event image description: Cover art of the Penguin Classics edition of The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, featuring an expressionist-style painting of a woman with short, dark hair and large, wide eyes, looking to the side. Behind her, an ornate gold-framed mirror reflects a smaller, sombre version of her face. The background is a deep, textured red.
