Friday Night Xmas Hike: Heights of Abraham and Giddy Edge

A fantastic little hike around Matlock, taking in woodlands, cliff edges, a river, and one of the most exposed sections of path in the Peak District. Beautiful views, even at night, of the lights of Matlock Bath and the surrounding countryside. We will also be able to witness the ‘Lights of Abraham’, a spectacular seasonal display of light sculptures in and around the Heights of Abraham at this time of year.

We will start from Matlock Station, head up the Limestone Way, and up through woodland towards Heights of Abraham park and the ‘Lights of…’ installations. Descending steeply towards Matlock Bath (with an optional chips/drink stop for those who fancy it), we will then hike up towards High Tor and Giddy Edge, an exposed section of path along the cliff above the climbers’ crags below. Pausing to take in the spectacular views of the Derwent Gorge and the lights of Matlock Bath, we will then meander back down towards the river Derwent and Hall Leys Park, and then on to the station.

What to bring: warm clothes, walking boots or trainers, snacks (though we will be stopping for chips…!) and water. AND A HEADTORCH! 😊
