FREE HIKE – Devil’s Dyke Horizons: A Classic South Downs Adventure
Join us for a long, scenic, and varied circular route through the South Downs National Park, taking in chalk downland, sweeping escarpment views, the legendary Devil’s Dyke, and a beautiful riverside finish along the River Adur. This is a fantastic full‑day hike with a mix of hills, open countryside, historic landmarks, and coastal charm — ideal for anyone who enjoys longer routes and diverse landscapes. 🌄 Route Overview We begin at Portslade Railway Station, heading out of town and into the rolling hills. Tracks across open fields guide us towards Devil’s Dyke, the deepest and widest dry valley in the UK. This dramatic landmark stretches almost a mile and carries centuries of folklore — including the tale that the Devil himself carved it out. You’ll also find the remains of an Iron Age hill fort nearby. After exploring the Dyke, we head towards Fulking Hill, following the chalk ridge with wide, open views across the escarpment and surrounding countryside. The route continues over Southwick Hill and Beeding Hill, offering classic South Downs scenery and peaceful grassland sections. We then descend into the valley to meet the River Adur, joining the riverside path just south of Upper Beeding. This gentle, scenic stretch leads us all the way to Shoreham‑by‑Sea, where you can enjoy the seaside atmosphere before we follow the road back to the trailhead. A long, rewarding loop with plenty of variety — hills, history, views, and water. 📍 Event Details 📅 Date: Saturday 12 September 🕘 Start Time: 10:30 AM 📍 Meeting Point: Portslade Railway Station 🔁 Route Type: Circular 📏 Distance: Approx. 14–16 miles - Moderate to Challenging with several hills and uneven terrain 🌟 Route Highlights (may change) Devil’s Dyke — the UK’s deepest dry valley, nearly a mile long Iron Age hill fort site Fulking Hill — classic chalk downland with panoramic views Rolling South Downs ridges River Adur valley — peaceful riverside walking Seaside atmosphere before the final stretch 🎒 What to Bring Proper hiking boots Lunch / snacks & at least 1.5L of water Layers for changing weather Good energy and a steady pace ⚠️ Important Notes Stay Together: Please stay with or behind the hike leader to maintain group pace and cohesion.
