Looking for a different side of Tokyo beyond the usual tourist spots?
Join us for an evening walk through Zoshigaya, a quiet and historic neighborhood located just next to Ikebukuro. 🌿
We’ll walk through the beautiful tree-lined streets, visit historic temples and shrines, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this hidden part of Tokyo while meeting new people.

After the walk, we’ll head toward Ikebukuro to experience the Oeshiki Festival, one of Zoshigaya’s most famous traditional autumn events. 🏮
The highlight of the evening is the Mando Procession, where groups carrying beautifully illuminated lantern towers parade through the streets with drums, chants, and traditional music.

On October 18, the procession is scheduled to leave Ikebukuro East Exit at around 7:00 PM and make its way toward Kishimojin Temple.
This event is not a guided sightseeing tour.
The main purpose is to meet new people, walk together, talk, and enjoy a unique autumn evening in Tokyo. 😊
Coming alone is completely welcome! 🙌

🌿 What We’ll Do
We’ll explore the Zoshigaya area together before enjoying the festival.
Zoshigaya Station → Kishimojin Keyaki Avenue → Kishimojin Temple → Otori Shrine → Homyoji Temple / Minami-Ikebukuro area → Ikebukuro → Oeshiki Mando Procession
Zoshigaya is only a short distance from busy Ikebukuro, but it has a completely different atmosphere.
The approach to Kishimojin Temple is lined with historic zelkova trees, and the area still retains traces of old Tokyo.
We’ll take our time walking, chatting, taking photos, and getting to know each other. 📸

🏮 What is Oeshiki?
Oeshiki is a traditional Buddhist event held every autumn.
During the Mando procession, groups carry large illuminated lantern decorations while playing drums and chanting as they move through the streets.

On October 18, participating groups are scheduled to leave Ikebukuro East Exit at around 7:00 PM and proceed toward Kishimojin Temple.
It’s a great opportunity to experience a local Japanese tradition that you might not normally discover on your own. 🇯🇵

The schedule and route may change slightly depending on congestion and festival conditions.

It is very close to Zoshigaya Station on the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line and Kishibojin-mae Station on the Tokyo Sakura Tram.
Please look for the organizer near the entrance of the 7-Eleven.

⚠️ We will leave at 17:10.
If you arrive after the group has left, it may be difficult to find us because we will be moving around and the festival area is expected to be crowded.
Please note that I will not be checking or replying to Meetup comments during the event. Once we leave the meeting point, I may not be able to assist with late arrivals.
Please arrive a little early if possible.

This is mainly a social event.
You don’t need to know anything about Japanese history, Buddhism, or the Oeshiki Festival.
You’re very welcome if you’re joining alone, if it’s your first Meetup, if your English or Japanese is beginner level, or if you simply want to meet new people and explore Tokyo together.
Japanese and international participants are both welcome! 🤝
We want to create a friendly environment where everyone can relax, talk, and make new friends.
Since the Oeshiki is an important traditional event for the local community, please be respectful toward local residents, worshippers, and other visitors.

🏮✨ 雑司ヶ谷 Evening Walk & 御会式｜東京の隠れた街並み＆伝統的な夜祭り ✨🏮
今回は、池袋のすぐ隣にありながら、落ち着いた昔ながらの雰囲気が残る雑司ヶ谷をみんなで散策します！ 🌿
ケヤキ並木や鬼子母神堂、大鳥神社、法明寺周辺などを歩きながら、新しい人との交流を楽しみましょう。
そして散策の最後には、雑司ヶ谷を代表する秋の伝統行事、御会式（おえしき）を楽しみます。 🏮
夜になると、美しく飾られた万灯を掲げた人々が、太鼓や掛け声とともに池袋から鬼子母神堂へ向かって練り歩きます。
10月18日は、19:00頃に池袋東口を出発し、鬼子母神堂へ向かう予定です。
このイベントは観光ツアーではありません。
メインはあくまで、みんなで街を歩きながら交流し、新しい友達を作ることです。 😊

🌿 当日の内容
雑司ヶ谷の街を散策した後、御会式を楽しみます。
雑司が谷駅 → 鬼子母神大門ケヤキ並木 → 鬼子母神堂 → 大鳥神社 → 法明寺・南池袋周辺 → 池袋方面 → 御会式・万灯練供養
雑司ヶ谷は池袋からすぐ近くですが、街の雰囲気は大きく異なります。
鬼子母神堂へ続く参道には歴史あるケヤキ並木があり、昔ながらの東京の雰囲気を楽しめるエリアです。
ゆっくり歩きながら、写真を撮ったり、お話ししたりして交流しましょう！ 📸

🏮 御会式とは？
御会式は、毎年秋に行われる伝統的な仏教行事です。
美しく飾られた万灯を掲げた人々が、太鼓や掛け声とともに街を練り歩きます。
10月18日は19:00頃に池袋東口を出発し、鬼子母神堂へ向かう予定です。
普段なかなか体験する機会のない、東京のローカルな伝統文化を一緒に楽しみましょう！ 🇯🇵

出発後は街を移動し、御会式周辺も混雑することが予想されるため、遅刻された場合は合流が難しくなる可能性があります。
