We will also be celebrating Barragan’s 65th Anniversary taking place on Thursdays in September. 🪅Barragan’s Burbank in the San Fernando Valley is another coveted iconic Mexican restaurant like Casa Vega in Sherman Oaks. In past years Barragan’s had three locations. The original location was founded in 1961 in Echo Park by Ramon Barragan & his wife Josie. A second location closed in 2019 in Glendale and today only the Burbank location remains. Ramon passed away at age 94 in 2025. Ramon’s son, Armando Barragan, took over ownership in 2000. His sons, Armando Jr. and Michael, are also involved spanning four generations of the family legacy. TRIVIA: Prince Philip while visiting California had heard about Barragan’s delicious guacamole. He requested his secret service staff take him there to dine (original location in Echo Park). BARRAGAN’S EST. 1961 Ramon immigrated to Los Angeles from Nayarit, Mexico at age 16. He worked his way up from a dishwasher to a head chef before converting a tiny, 24-seat coffee shop into the original Barragan's Mexican Restaurant. Over the decades, the family expanded the brand into a small regional chain famous for giant portions, strong margaritas, and classic Mexican-American comfort food like cocido (short rib soup) and hard-shell tacos. Location Timeline: The original location opens in 1961 on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park (closed in 2013 when the family sold the property). 1981: A second location opens on Central Avenue in Glendale (closed in August 2019). 1985: The final location opens on Victory Boulevard in Burbank, which serves as their current standing flagship. The Start of the Revolt The movement began on September 16, 1810. A Catholic priest named Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church bell in the town of Dolores. He gave a passionate speech known as the Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores), urging people to rise up against Spanish control. How Freedom Was Won Hidalgo's initial uprising was defeated, and he was executed in 1811. Other leaders like José María Morelos and Vicente Guerrero kept fighting for the cause. The war ended in 1821 when rebel forces and political leaders united under the Plan of Iguala, forcing Spain to sign the Treaty of Córdoba and recognize Mexican sovereignty. How It Is Celebrated Today Mexicans celebrate Independence Day every year on September 16. Festivities actually begin on the night of September 15 with music, food, and a reenactment of the historic Grito by civic leaders.
