Let's go for a tour of the fountains and gardens on the east end of the National Mall!
For bonus points, the National Christopher Columbus Association and Italian-American organizations from the DC area will be hosting a ceremony honoring Christopher Columbus at the Columbus Memorial Statue, and we should arrive at Columbus Circle just in time to enjoy the
United States Marine Band begin the program with patriotic marches.
❶ What we'll do:
Starting from the Enid A. Haupt Garden, just south of the Smithsonian Visitor Center, we'll go for a clockwise walk around the National Mall, checking out notable fountains, gardens, and monuments along our way, plus enjoying the Columbus Day ceremony at Columbus Circle.
The walk is about 4 miles and should take about 2 hours at a moderate pace. The path is level and mostly paved, with steps in places.
