Every C++ function signature is an thesis statement, and the argument parameters type you choose tell callers (and future readers) what you intend to do -- whether you intend to snapshot, observe, modify, sink, or share ownership of what they pass in. This talk surveys the full space of ways to pass a parameter, from T and T const& through raw pointers, rvalue references, and uniqueptr/sharedptr, and shows what each one says, which ones to avoid, and why. You’ll leave with a small set of guidelines for choosing parameter types that express intent, avoid surprising lifetimes, and make your APIs hard to misuse.

Speaker:
Richard Powell started using C++ 20 years ago to write a psychoacoustic audio encoder/decoder and has continued to explore how to make Software that unlocks the potential of hardware to bring amazing applications to life. He enjoys teaching and learning about C++ and programming, and has presented several talks at CppCon, C++Now, and the local Bay Area C++ user groups.
