Odysseus: A Stoic Hero?

“All Greek literature and art, and just about all Greek philosophy, resonate against the background of Homer.” A. A. Long The hero Odysseus provided the Stoics with a rich subject for discussion. On the one hand, his epic voyage home offers insights into endurance, resourcefulness, and courage. On the other, the Stoics viewed certain aspects of his character in a more critical light. We’ll read short passages by both Homer and the Stoics such as Epictetus and Seneca, considering what lessons we might draw today from Odysseus' story and the timeless masterpiece that is the Odyssey. A printout will be provided.
