[Performance] Between Orbits and Sleep by Hiroshi Ebina

Date: Sat, 10 October 2026

Time: 3 – 4pm

Venue: The Engine Room, SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark

Ticketing: Free, by registration

Experience an intimate, site-responsive sound performance by sound artist Hiroshi Ebina, presented as an extension of the listening station, Between Orbits and Sleep alongside Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Spacescape.

Drawing from his albums Into the Darkness of the Night and On Solitude, Ebina will perform an improvised ambient set which encourages reflection, stillness, and attentive listening. Mirroring Sugimoto’s orbital images, where continuous transformation unfolds within seemingly identical views of the Earth, Ebina’s music develops through recurring melodic and harmonic phrases that gradually evolve over time.

Far from mere accompaniment, the live set becomes an active part of the installation, deepening the dialogue between the vastness of outer space and the internal landscape of human consciousness.

This programme is held in conjunction with Hiroshi Sugimoto: Form Is Emptiness.

About Hiroshi Ebina

Hiroshi Ebina is a Japanese sound artist whose practice spans ambient music composition, gagaku performance—the traditional ritual music of Japan—and minimalist landscape photography across urban and natural environments. After spending several years in Tokyo and New York, he returned to his hometown outside Tokyo in 2018. Holding a master’s degree in religious studies, Ebina’s work frequently engages with themes drawn from Zen Buddhism and the spiritual dimension.

Since 2018, Ebina has released music through labels around the world, including KITCHEN. LABEL, Mystery Circles, and Seil Records. In February 2026, he released his eighth solo album, On Solitude, which was selected for Bandcamp’s New and Notable and featured on editorial playlists across Spotify and Apple Music.

Alongside his solo work, Ebina actively collaborates with artists such as Hinako Omori, marucoporoporo, IDRA, Kin Leonn, and Erland Cooper, in addition to undertaking commissioned works in Japan and internationally. He has performed in cities including New York, Tokyo, Seoul, and Singapore, sharing stages with artists such as Aspidistrafly, Meitei, Khotin, Emily A. Sprague, and Cool Maritime.

From February to April 2025, Ebina presented a sound installation at ArtScience Museum, featuring two ambient albums released on KITCHEN. LABEL. The installation explored the relationship between sound and spirituality, offering visitors a contemplative and immersive listening experience.
