R.A. Fisher, a brilliant and inarguably one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century was also a lifelong and vocal advocate for eugenics. In recent years, his posthumous reputation has been challenged for these beliefs, regardless of how inconsequential and frustrated they were. However, his late career decision to publicly challenge the causal relationship between smoking and cancer is both baffling and hugely consequential.
