Second run-out for this walk first led in 2023. This is an extension of a previous walk led with the insertion of an additional loop part-way through the walk. Its undulating terrain with the most significant ascent being a 10min steep climb at the start of the walk. The route comprises woodland trails, field edge paths, quiet roads, riverside trails, field crossings and a graveyard! En route we pass the ruins of Kirkham Priory in its idyllic riverside setting, there are extensive sections walking alongside the river Derwent and the ‘loop’ affords us a look around the site of Howsham Mill, which is owned by the Renewable Energy Trust. Look out for otters! The walk will be led at a steady pace: not too fast, not too slow. Please be ready to start walking at the advertised time. Walk fee: £3. No dogs please. Bring packed lunch/drink/snacks with you. Start location: Kirkham is situated a few minutes from the A64. We have permission to use the pub car park at the Stone Trough Inn. Postcode is YO60 7JS. When entering the car park, drive up to the top of it and bear left to park behind the pub. Only park elsewhere if/when this area is full. After-walk refreshment at the Stone Trough Inn. I have no formal walk leader or first-aid qualifications and the Group does not have insurance. When you RSVP for any walk, you accept that you remain responsible for your own safety at all times. You are required to respect the walk leader and be mindful of the safety of others. Please keep to the pace of the group and don’t go off ahead even if you think you know the route.
