Join us for a special edition of SAM Late Nights, where the depths of Hiroshi Sugimoto: Form Is Emptiness are brought to life through an evening of sound and site-specific response. This edition will feature ultratronics by Japanese sound and visual artist, Ryoji Ikeda. ultratronics [live set] is a concert taken from his latest album, ‘ultratronics' released in 2022. ‘ultratronics' featuring audio material recorded between 1989 and 1999 and compositions created between 2013 and 2022, ’ultratronics’ explores sound’s arithmetical and computational essence and renders them into the propulsive auditory experience that constitutes Ikeda’s sound signature. Taking the shape of an audiovisual concert, ultratronics [live set] uses raw data and mathematical models to generate music and projections. Jakarta-based artist Wahono reunites with RAGAURA, Sonia Kwek, XUE, Josh Tirados and Kansh, for a new site-specific work continuing a collaboration first developed through Strange Weather’s UPACARA KAMPRET! in 2023. Working across sound and movement, the performance explores slow and intersubjective tempos, taking cues from images where organic and technological systems begin to collapse into one another: banyan roots tangled with wires, termites eating through metal, meteorites lodged inside gongs, and extinct fauna inhabiting AI servers. These images act less as a narrative than as a shared DNA for the work – a way for sound, bodies and materials to mutate together in real time. KELAB MALAM Later, KELAB MALAM returns to RASA for the night’s second movement by Strange Weather Dunia. Following SAM Late Nights, the programme shifts from the measured intensity of the museum into the looser grammar of the club. Tokyo’s YELLOWUHURU (FLATTOP) joins Dexter Colt (Lifted Trax), A’alely, yetpet, and Isabel Soto for a late session shaped by elastic tempo, oblique transitions and the slow accumulation of tension across the room. About Ryoji Ikeda Japan’s leading electronic composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda focuses on the essential characteristics of sound itself and that of visuals as light by means of both mathematical precision and mathematical aesthetics. Ikeda has gained a reputation as one of the few international artists working convincingly across both visual and sonic media. He elaborately orchestrates sound, visuals, materials, physical phenomena and mathematical notions into immersive live performances and installations. Alongside of pure musical activity, Ikeda has been working on long-term projects through live performances, installations, books and CD’s such as 'datamatics' (2006-), 'test pattern' (2008-), 'spectra' (2001-), ‘cyclo.’ a collaborative project with Carsten Nicolai, ‘superposition’ (2012-), 'supersymmetry' (2014-) and ‘micro | macro’ (2015-). About Wahono x RAGAURA Wahono is the founder and creative director of DIVISI62, a sound and visual arts label exploring issues of identity, Indonesian history, and the cross-pollination of diverse heritages. The label also serves as a vehicle for his solo work and other projects, including the gamelan trio Uwalmassa, of which he is a member. The trio has reached wider international audiences through appearances at Unsound Festival and on NTS Radio, among others. Wahono also marked Strange Weather's first-ever release with SW001. RAGAURA is a movement ensemble borne from the dirt and dust of the jam sessions hosted by the artistic duo RAGA at their now defunct industrial space. As a collective body, RAGAURA unspools itself across the hinterlands of space and time; dancing the poetics of the moving world. Currently, Josh Tirados, Kansh, Sonia Kwek and XUE are its core members but are at times joined by other errant children of the RAGA community.
